2002-2003 Transect Surveys

Collecting a sample from a high density location
If in the course of walking a transect a location was identified where the density of artifacts reached 5 per square meter, we gave this location an ID number (the letter A followed by a sequential number), recorded its location with a GPS and a total station, collected a sample from a 1 meter radius circle, and recorded some general observations about the kinds of materials found at the location and its potential for further work.  Some of initial questions are how these "patches", areas of high artifact densities, relate to various landscape attributes (distance from the Nile Valley, distance from possible water sources, etc.) and how they relate to the scatters, the areas between the patches.
