2002-2003 - A0049

(click on image for a QuickTime 360 panorama)

A0049 is a concentration of Middle Paleolithic artifacts at the high point along a narrow ridge line.  This location was selected for more intensive investigation because the artifact densities were quite high and because of the frequency of Levallois technology. Topography and artifact density at A0049
A view along one collection line at A0049 At this location we employed a different sampling strategy.  Rather than collect in a grid, we used a radial system with sample lines spaced 15 degrees apart.  On the 45 degree interval lines, samples were collected each three meters.  On the remaining lines, samples were collected each 5 meters.  At the center, as defined by the artifact densities, we collected from a grid in order to obtain a sample from adjacent units.
