For the 2002-03 field season, we established a base camp in
the High Desert. Camp consisted of dining, kitchen and lab tents,
toilet and shower tents, personal sleeping tents, and security tents.
Most of the artifact analysis, drawing and photography was
done in the field. We used laptops powered by car batteries to enter
data and to plot finds.
Supplies were brought to the camp each day by camel.
In addition to food and water (the red jugs), we also brought in a car battery each day for
power.
This is the dig house for the historic period Abydos
excavations. It is located in the Low Desert. Our project area
is on the escarpment in the background of this photo. We were supplied
from here and used the lab space after our field season was over.
This photo is taken from the edge of the escarpment.
You can see the across the Nile Valley to the eastern escarpment, you can
also see the white Abydos dig house in the valley, and you get a feeling for how
cold it is in Dec. and Jan.
