This photo, taken at ASPS-37, is typical of the High Desert terrain.
Here the surface is a pavement of small limestone fragments and unworked
flint.
Another typical High Desert context is here, at ASPS-17,
where the surface is a pavement of weathered limestone.

Some of the wadis in the region have caves. We have
not yet tested these caves for Paleolithic deposits. Note the person
(Marie Soressi) in front for scale.
Artifacts are also quite common on relic Nile terraces
(pictured here in the foreground and background).
Historic Abydos is in the Low Desert.
One of the more impressive features
is a mudbrick enclosure called the Shunet ez-Zebib. It dates to
about 5000 years ago.
There are numerous excavation and survey projects on-going
at historic Abydos. Here, Matt Adams is shown discussing recent
excavations in areas adjacent to the Shunet shown in the photo above.
