2002-2003 Transect Surveys

The transect surveys were designed to collect data on the location and density of artifactual materials across the High Desert landscape.  Survey teams of 3 to 4 individuals used GPS to walk transect lines that, to the extent possible, ignored topographic changes.

One of our primary concerns is to document not only where artifactual material occurs but also where it does not.  Thus, samples were collected every 100 meters regardless of artifact densities.
Samples were collected from a circle with a 1 meter radius.  All visible artifacts were collected regardless of size.  The location of each collection unit was recorded with GPS and given a name consisting of the letter "S" and a sequential number.
