After some fifty years of neglect, Ami's
trench itself was nearly filled with backdirt from the original excavation
that had washed in. The first task, then, was to remove this overlying material
to expose the original trench limits. Much of the 1987 season was spent removing
the fill in Sector II, where it became apparent that the earlier excavators had
opened up a considerable lateral excavation toward the west. All of the backdirt
was dry-screened and several thousand lithic artifacts were recovered. This
material, though without any archaeological context, served as a study
collection and, indeed, was useful in demonstrating the nature of excavator bias
in Ami's collections.
