| After three seasons of excavation at Pech IV, we have a
complete sample of Bordes' levels from the western section. We
also have a sample of Level 8 and the burn features within it. However, the west section was not complete. What you see in the center of the photo above is the bedrock, and the west section had roughly one more meter to go. Once it is excavated, the west section will become a complete record of the sequence from bedrock at the base to the final collapse of the cave at the top. In addition, the portion of Level 8 that we sampled last year seems to have suffered more disturbance than the part that remains (as marked south section in the photo above). Thus, this year we are removing what remains of the roof fall over this section of the site, and we are going to excavate a small portion of the Level 8 deposits there. |
