Another important aspect of Roc de Marsal is
the presence in the lower portion of the exposed sequence of burning
features. While it is generally assumed that by this time (post
125,000 years ago) that Neandertals were able to use fire, good evidence
of this is not frequently preserved.
At Roc de Marsal evidence of fire is present in the exposed section in the
form of several discrete, dark lenses and possibly too the bright red lens
visible in this photo.
One of the project's geologists, Paul Goldberg, has studied these types of
features in other Paleolithic sites, including at Pech de l'Azé IV.
He will be taking micromorphological samples of the Roc de Marsal features
and it is expected that we will excavate them during the 2005 season. |
