Background - Burning

Back | Up

Another important aspect of Roc de Marsal is the presence in the lower portion of the exposed sequence of burning features.  While it is generally assumed that by this time (post 125,000 years ago) that Neandertals were able to use fire, good evidence of this is not frequently preserved.

At Roc de Marsal evidence of fire is present in the exposed section in the form of several discrete, dark lenses and possibly too the bright red lens visible in this photo.

One of the project's geologists, Paul Goldberg, has studied these types of features in other Paleolithic sites, including at Pech de l'Azé IV.  He will be taking micromorphological samples of the Roc de Marsal features and it is expected that we will excavate them during the 2005 season.
