Lafille’s notes describe hearth-like combustion features near
the base of the sequence, and our work has confirmed their existence.
What is especially interesting about the burning at Roc de Marsal
is that it is present as very thin horizons.
In 2006 we were able
to show that the products of several burning events exist as discrete
entities rather than as multiple, super-imposed and overlapping features
(such as occurred at Pech IV and Kebara, for example).
In the
case of those near the front of the cave, there are relatively thick
(2-4 cm) layers of ash which have become brecciated and therefore extremely
well-preserved.
Their
discrete nature of these features opens the possibility of analyzing
the spatial distribution of lithics and faunal remains in relation
to them, which is something that is extremely rare in European Middle
Paleolithic contexts. |
