The Aterian, known only across North Africa, is essentially like the Mousterian, but also includes special elements not seen in other Mousterian contexts, namely tanged or stemmed artifacts, and occasional bifacial implements. It has recently been suggested (McBrearty and Brooks 2000) that this industry represents one of the earliest fully modern adaptations in association with anatomically modern humans.
