Software for Archaeology |
| The following programs were written to address various problems we have faced in doing Paleolithic archaeology over the last fifteen years. Though our purpose in each case was to make our own work more efficient, we have tried to design our programs to be flexible enough for general use in archaeology. They are distributed here free of charge in their current state. Every attempt has been made to remove bugs from the programs, but we also know that bugs still exist. If you encounter problems using these programs, please let us know and we will attempt to address them as time allows. |
| Some of these programs (Entrer Trois, EDM and CC-Plot) are all available with source code and data on the CD publication A Multimedia Companion to The Middle Paleolithic Site of Combe-Capelle Bas (France). We have also detailed the use of computers (and our software) in several publications. |
| Program | Description | Operating System |
| Plot | GIS for piece provenienced artifacts. This program is a Windows replacement for CC-Plot (see below). | Windows. Has been tested on 95/98/2000/NT. It should also run on XP and ME. |
| E4 Beta | Data Entry. Windows replacement for Entrer Trois. This program is in Beta meaning that there are still many bugs. However, the program is functional, and bug reports would be very useful for us. | Windows. Has been tested on Windows 98 but it should also run on all flavors of Windows. |
| Entrer Trois | Data entry. Well suited to measuring large collections of stone tools, but easily adapted to other kinds of materials. Supports electronic calipers and scales. | DOS. Has been tested in Windows 95, 98, 2000 and XP. |
| EDM | Survey data collection. Well suited for general survey or piece proveniencing artifacts. Can be customized to record user defined fields with each recorded point. | DOS. Has been tested in Windows 95 and 98. A 2000/XP version is also now available. Also works on HP-95/100/200 computers. A Windows CE version is in preparation. |
| CC-Plot | GIS for piece provenienced artifacts. Program written
specifically for use with data from the site of Combe- Capelle Bas, France, but it reads DBF files. |
DOS. Has been tested in Windows 95 and 98. |
