La Ferrassie - Delporte

It was in the more eastern part of the site that Delporte continued excavations from 1968-1973, focusing especially on cleaning a large sagittal section (pictured above right) at the extreme east and a frontal, or longitudinal section (pictured above left) along the back wall of the cave/shelter. Most of the deposits in this part of the site were Upper Paleolithic, with some Middle Paleolithic (Ferrassie Mousterian) deposits at the base, which appeared to have been subject to a fair degree of disturbance, principally cryoturbation and channeling, which may have mixed some of the deposits. As discussed in some detail by Laville, it is very difficult to make exact correlations from the western part of the site where we are excavating to the eastern part where Delporte excavated.
